Human Powered Vehicle Challenge:

The Human Powered Vehicle Challenge (HPVC) is an engineering student design competition organized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The challenge of the competition is for students to design, analyze, manufacture, and assemble a Human Powered Vehicle (HPV), which may be use to run everyday errands.

The participating teams must present their vehicles design, analysis, and calculations to a panel of judges as well as pass a preliminary safety test. The team will then be eligible for the competition which consists of three different categories (i.e. Utility, Sprint, and the Endurance).

The Eagle Riders

CSULA HPV History:
Cal State LA has participated in this event for the past three years (2007,2008 and 2009) and plans to continue its participation for the years to come. The new vehicle name is the Eagle Rider (III), we kept the previous team name, which was Eagle Rider (II), So as to reflect the spirit of our school and give a sense of tradition.

CSULA HPV Team:
The team name is the Eagle Riders and is compose of all class levels. The HPV team will allow mechanical engineering senior design students to take the leadership position(s).Team members are also allowed to select the vehicle component(s) they wish to work on. The team is divided into subsections which include: Drivetrain, Steering/Suspension, Brakes/Wheels, Body/Frame, and more.

The HPV team is not only responsible for everything from designing to building, but also for fundraising for the cost of the vehicle and the trip. It is estimated that each year the team raises over $5000 to have a complete vehicle as well as a safe and comfortable trip. Some of the fundraising included holiday pin sales, t-shirt sales, sponsorships, grant funding, not to mention out of pocket expenses.
